QF does a lot of great things, and a lot of half-assed poorly managed product rollouts -- hence the frustration that some people experience. If you miss the bad phase, you might think it was a great success; while those that went through the bad phase, think it is a disaster.
Both are right. The QF rfid baggage self-check rollout is a great example. The system has some fundamental flaws -- which approx 1% of pax will encounter. So, for 99% it works great, but for 1% it does not work at all, and the staff are befuddled "but it works for everyone else, what's wrong with you"? The cause is poor system design, poor management, and dismal testing, with failure to execute due diligence to ensure correct performance. This seems to be true in the parts of the airline that I can see, and also in parts that I cannot see. Thus the recent increase in random, unexpected and unpredictable accidents, system failures; engines failing, avionics failing, training failing. Quite an amazing pattern of failure.
At first one thinks it is random and unavoidable. But using modern management techniquies, and causal analysis, the cause is easily found and fixed. I hope QF executive management is doing this now, as they are at the helm of an airline that is starting to fray. A great airline, that is being nibbled away by conflicting and ill-considered management. That is my opinion, based on lots of experience with QF, and I'm sticking to it.
