Generally, IME upgrades are easier mid-week. But, at times weekends are easy too. E.g. I happen to look at SA/SU 12/13 westbound. SA even had NC=2, XC=2. Both days are only about 50% booked. Summer vacation time often shows low premium cabin loads too. Bottom line: not the easiest but definitely doable.
@ OP: How many weeks out are you travelling?
I fully agree, this is the reason why I am stretching my flexibility for a Wed-Wed trip. Other days of the week had Z2 to Z0 and only 6 or 7 unassigned C seats.
It is likely that IM opened up NC/XC for 12/13 because at this point they don't expect to sell all the C seats. I see this quite often, with premium award space opening up ten days or so before departure. But I am traveling at the end of the month and must book now (besides if I were to wait, the cheaper fare buckets would not likely satisfy advance purchase requirements).
