It won't take that many points. Last time I did it, I booked a paid stay in a Garden View room.
The SPG agent used the 1k/night award to put me into a Deluxe Studio, and then applied the 1-category upgrade due to SPG Golds and got into the suite.
They should be able to do the same for you as a Platinum member.
