Print the e-ticket receipt so that you have a record of the e-ticket number, which unlike a PNR can always be traced.

If the charge never shows up then whether or not you tell the airline is up to you. But ultimately the responsibility for processing the payment offered by the customer lies with the merchant so I dare say that there is no requirement on you to do so.
