Well, this is how the 888, 889 pattern goes:
CX 888 arrives at JFK from HKG via YVR and departs JFK - HKG nonstop as CX 841
CX 840 arrives at JFK from HKG nonstop and becomes CX 889 JFK - YVR - HKG
As for CX 830, 831 and 846, 845, they are all nonstop and use their a/c respectively.
