Thank you everyone. I assumed we would have to clear customs somewhere but didn't even think we would have to transfer from domestic to international at Izmir to do so. Makes Lufthansa the simplest option really, a tad more expensive but not so mind bending as the Istanbul transit with Turkish Airlines.
