I often rip movies from dvds I own to the iphone and watch them during my trips. Figure on 1 GB per 2 hr movie. Most apps don't take up much memory. The one exception is my GPS app (Navigon) since it has to store all of the maps locally. I believe that might be 1 GB (I don't have the phone with me right now).
