I separate my music from my mobile device, so no issue with buying the basic 16Gb, and having all my music collection on the iPod Classic (remember those?). That being said, there is anecdotal evidence from headfi the iPhone 4 has better sound quality than the iPod...

So to answer your question 16Gb is plenty for me - YMMV
