In the event of flight cancellations, Avis will not charge a non-cancellation fee as long as a flight number and airline were provided in the reservation prior to scheduled pick up.
So
did you have your airline and flight number in your reservation?
I always put that in, not even thinking of this, but just in case it's delayed. But according to what you quoted from Avis (
bolded above), had you not called but had your airline and flight number in there, they would have not charged a non-cancellation fee, since without you notifying them that you were getitng there another way, they would have released the reservation a certain amount of time later.
