In the event of flight cancellations, Avis will not charge a non-cancellation fee as long as a flight number and airline were provided in the reservation prior to scheduled pick up.
So did you have your airline and flight number in your reservation?

I always put that in, not even thinking of this, but just in case it's delayed. But according to what you quoted from Avis (bolded above), had you not called but had your airline and flight number in there, they would have not charged a non-cancellation fee, since without you notifying them that you were getitng there another way, they would have released the reservation a certain amount of time later.
