Agree with your premise... (although don't they hold some special saver award inventory for 1K's? Is this domestic only, or int'l as well?)
However, being a 1K has been extremely helpful as I am able to call the 1K line, get expert assistance, modify / change / waitlist award flights etc.
The 1K line, and flexibility in booking award travel, have been the two 1K benefits that have provided me the most value (in 4 months of being 1K).
I am booking the hardest route (SFO/SYD) at the hardest time (Christmas through New Years), and with the 1K line, patience, and persistence I think everything will work out. (although it does appear we will be waiting until close to our travel dates for some of the cabin confirmations...)
