Guys it is the cultural thing. If you go to Europe, you stand out like a sore thumb in white sneakers and shorts, looking like a typical American tourist. The hotel staff there also treats you differently if you are not dressed according to their code. Same thing for Asian hotel staffs. Showing up in jeans and t-shirts with a daypack is not the acceptable code and makes one feel that the staff is "snooty". No thought is given to how you could dress to match the "standard" expected of you for a classy hotel. There are lot of hotels under $10 a day who would welcome you and not be "snooty" no matter how you show up. So if their "snootiness" bothers you, try one of those hotels . You will quickly learn not to complain about the staff at high end hotels when you show up in shorts and sandals
