If you are waitlisted then you are, by definition, on the list waiting for an upgrade spot. They don't do anything to you unless they move you into an upgraded seat at which point they change your fare class (to R). You can add/remove yourself from the waitlist all you wait. Although you don't get to decide when you move from the waitlist to a confirmed upgrade.
