Glad I found this thread.
My flight got cancelled and I didn't think about canceling the reservation since I never recall Avis disclosing a no-show fee like some hotels and a credit card info isn't required for a reservation. I booked online.
Imagine my surprise when I was billed for the entire weekend that I did not use their car!!
I am a First/Preferred member and I guess they just thought they would ding my credit card on file *even though* such practices are explicitly not allowed by their FAQ/TOS. See below.
Everybody should watch their credit card statements or cancel their reservations.
Unreal. Nice way to treat your elite customers Avis. May be time to think about another company even though I have been using you exclusively the last couple years.

What is the No Show (NSF) or Non-Cancellation Fee policy for Avis?
Only the following types of Avis reservations require a valid credit card at the time the reservation is made and have a non-cancellation fee*:
Reservations made through the Avis telephone reservation center for select specialty car categories during peak travel periods;
Certain promotions on Avis.com.
*This non-cancellation fee is assessed when:
the reservation is not cancelled 24 hours prior to the reserved pick up time, and
the Avis vehicle is not picked up at the pre-reserved time
The fee may vary by location and car group from $10 plus taxes and surcharges to one full day's rental fee plus taxes and surcharges. Specific fee information is provided to the customer during the reservation process on avis.com, the Avis reservations center or by the Avis Reservation Service Agent.
To avoid the non-cancellation fee, such reservations must be cancelled 24 hours prior to the scheduled pick up time. Reservations may be cancelled on Avis.com, or by calling Avis at 800-230-4898.
Avis Wizard and Preferred members with a credit card listed in their profile will not be required to enter a credit card at time of booking as the credit card in their profile will be used. In the event such customers reserve an Avis car requiring a credit card at time of booking and do not cancel prior to the scheduled pick up and fail to rent the car, the non-cancellation fee disclosed at the time of reservation will be charged.
In the event of flight cancellations, Avis will not charge a non-cancellation fee as long as a flight number and airline were provided in the reservation prior to scheduled pick up.
