WATCH OUT!!! Eupgrades may cost you more money!!!

Hi all,

I just had an unpleasant call with Aeroplan. Waiting for a supervisor to call me back.

I am SE and my wife is E.

We are on a flight YYZ to NRT later this week. I upgraded both of us during the 7 day window. Confirmed. Eupgrade credits deducted.

Now we are within the 4 day window and there are 9 upgrade spots available. So I call the desk and they confirmed to me this afternoon that there are no problems to cancel my SE upgrades and use hers.

I wanted to make sure tonight before I actually did it and they CSR told me that because I am now cancelling my eupgrade, I now have to pay a higher fare.

This is the exact wording on their website:

Confirmed upgrades cannot be cancelled online. For assistance with a confirmed upgrade, please contact Air Canada Reservations or see an Air Canada airport agent. If you choose to cancel your upgrade and your originally purchased Economy booking class is no longer available, you may need to pay an applicable fare difference.

The beef that I have is this:

1. This never was the case with a paper upgrade. I could pick and choose and cancel if I wanted to without worrying about fare class.

2. I never got the "benefits" of the upgaded fare class such as 150% miles, so why is my original purchased booking class on longer available? Air Canada considers me a Tango Plus "W" class even with my upgrade but when I want to cancel my upgrade, all of a sudden I am now considered in a higher fare class?

Let's say I chose not to upgrade at all. That means I now have to pay a higher price for my economy class ticket even though I purchased it months ago???

3. What is wrong with swapping my wife's points with mine if upgrade space is available?

If anybody can understand ths logic, please enlighten me.
