The way it's been implemented is certainly confusing, but the reasoning behind it is good. These are mainly flights that were operated by ERJ-145s in the past, which are a pretty awful experience and certainly not "elite friendly". The aircraft that are replacing them on these flights, typically CRJ-700s and E-170s are a far more comfortable experience. CO has been very quick to find a way to get these onto routes where more capacity was needed but a 737 couldn't be justified - big improvement all around.

I can understand them branding them as "United Express" - in the "new United" sense - it is odd that they also talk about it being operated by United Airlines, Inc which would seem to be very confusing to pax!
