I have no idea where you're looking to fly from, how many people, etc, but just as a data point, I did some searches on ExpertFlyer for award inventory on QF close 11ish months out very recently to/from LAX (to/from several AU/NZ airports QF servers from LAX), and found that over a course of weeks, there were plenty awards (on certain days on certain flights) in one direction and consistently zero awards available in the other direction.
I was not actually trying to book, I was just looking around for reference (I won't be trying for an award to Australia for another year or two). Nevertheless, had I been trying to book, I was confounded by the imbalance of awards in one direction versus the other. (And I was checking all cabins, and multiple cabins had award inventory in one direction, and no cabins in the other!)
