For me I prefer Hawaii. Same cost to get there (from here in Cali) and only an extra hour or two flight. However, I should say I think it's a shame Mexico is getting a bad rap when most of the problems are either ini the border towns or among gangs around Mexico City. My wife and two kids spent a month in Curnevaca last summer. It's a city of a million two hours south of Mexico City. I went and visited them and it was just beautiful and I felt perfectly safe. Well, until I was running down the street Sunday morning about 7:00 and came across a group of Federales with machine guns.

Serioiusly though, except for that moment I felt perfectly safe, the people are super friendly, most stuff is cheaper down there, and you can experience some cultural things you can't do at home. Just don't go out drinking until 4 in the morning and stay away from the dark alleys!
