With due respect, 20% tip is NOT the North American I know, speaking as someone who had spent a significant time living in the States.

If you are a waitress, I can understand your wanting for 20% tip. As a matter of fact, maybe the higher the better.

Having said that, 10% is the baseline for me. Tips can go up and down from there, depending on the services and all. And for most of my American friends, maybe 15%.
