I for one decided a long time ago that international mileage upgrades are a scam. (And I'm speaking about airlines generally, not AA specifically.) It's very, very difficult to confirm at the time of booking. Often you have to take circuitous routings instead of more convenient nonstops. If you do get upgraded, it's generally at the last minute and into the worst seat (e.g. middle seat in the last row of J).
So I gave up. I don't even try to upgrade internationally anymore. I use my miles for other things. When I want to fly J, I pay for J and look for good fares -- sales, advance purchase discounts, etc. It is MUCH easier and less stressful than trying to upgrade. The peace of mind of having a confirmed, paid J seat is wonderful.
