This is my operational upgrade success since 2003:

Star Alliance: over 20 times (split US,UA,SK,LH,BMi)
One World: 2 times (once Iberia, once BA)


The chances of getting an op-up because you are silver is minimal in my experience. The advantages of silver are lounge access for economy tickets, seat selection, and extra miles.
