One of the reasons I was told a long time ago was in case of Oversell & Problems, Local passengers would have more than likely someplace to go home to. Where as a Connecting passenger would be stuck trying to get from where they were coming from & where they are going to.

YES I agree it sucks on upgrades & such. But makes sense when everyone may be fighting over a few seats after Major Weather Issues & such.
