I stayed there a few years ago in June. We selected it because having a larger room is very helpful for us with our young daughter (3 years old at the time). The pool area at the resort is nice and the pedestrian walk along the harbor is great. We also enjoyed the view of San Diego across the harbor. My daughter especially liked seeing the naval ships. There are some decent restaurants on Coronado Island.

From a transportation perspective, you will definitely need a car when staying at this property. Onsite parking is very good (garage under the hotel). Driving to Balboa Park, La Jolla, Gas Lamp District, etc. was also very easy. We also drove up to the Carlsbad area to see LegoLand and the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park.

I have never stayed at the Marina but have generally heard good things about it. Bottom line, I wouldn't rule out The Coronado Resort based on location. It really depends on what else you plan on doing while visiting San Diego and if you plan on renting a car. If you do have a car, you will most likely wind up driving to many of the sites regardless of which property you stay at. Hope this helps....
