I just don't understand this line of business reasoning; I don't think it's to CX's benefit. I understand it's not just them. I would think that an airline allowing a flier to freely move their miles within an alliance would have a great marketing tool.
The reason for this rule is to prevent selling of miles / redemption tickets. This is prohibited with most international airlines, not just CX, except those FFPs that allow for 'family accounts'.
