I'm sure this will come as a shock to some Brits, but taking Amtrak makes British Rail look positively exceptional (*). The central coast corridor is often under construction or just plain congested, and that 10-12 hour trip is sometimes delayed by 3-4 hours.
That being said, I'm probably taking it soon anyway, because I can't fly where I need to go, and I've driven it way too many times.
* I'm operating on basic stereotypes here. I've taken Brit Rail all over the UK and rarely had a problem. One time their delay actually helped me, because I was just as late as the previous train and would have had a long wait for the next one.

Also OT, but Southwest has had at least 3 boarding methods in their history and the current one is the least scrum-like. Before this, you were issued an A, B, or C boarding group, depending on check-in order. Each group of 40-50 passengers boarded at once. Before that, you received a numbered plastic boarding card at airport check-in, and they boarded by groups; no real ordering, unless you were #1 and people felt generous.
Boarding a foreign airline like Alitalia at LHR? Now that felt like a scrum.
