I discovered that I now prefer the tray system. It prevents damage to my shoes and bags by encasing them in the tray!

To the OP's question, I do not think you have done anything wrong. By design the standard tray system at T5 appears to be designed for two persons, and at busy periods they tell you to come up and start loading anyway.
