I used to do this ALL the time for my wife, back when she was a NW plat and a CO nobody. I put her NW number in, waited until the upgrade, and then at checkin I would switch her to her CO number... did this until she finally made platinum on CO. Never had any problems. I am quite surprised that the OP had problems doing something similar.
