I tried doing this once with two PNR's on different fare classes. CS rep made it sound like it could be done but would require change fees and buying up to the highest fare class on the two reservations. Not worth it IMO.

I had a little over an hour connection so made sure to pack light. Someone here will know, but I'm pretty sure you'll have to claim and re-check any bags after the first leg.
