I looked at AA but it seems they only fly from BCN to JFK and we would like to avoid JFK if at all possible. I checked out CO thinking we could do an open jaw reward but it is going to cost 77,500 points per person and the credit card offer is only 50,000 right now.
You can use AA points on a partner like BA or Iberia. BA flies out of EWR (not sure about PHL, but I would think they fly out of there as well). BA and Iberia have plenty of daily flights between LHR and BCN. Then on the way back you can fly either through LHR again, BCN-JFK-PHL on AA or BCN-MAD-PHL on Iberia.
