Funny ... I had the exact opposite experience coming in from EZE in early December last year. I choose the connection to ORD that gave me 2 hours (or so) in IAD versus the close connection of 45 minutes so my bags would make it.
However my bags ended up going on the early flight while I sat and sat in the IAD RCC waiting for my flight. I even asked at IAD to switch to the early flight when I landed but was told no since my bags needed more time to connect!
Guess its Murphy's Law on that one!
