After going through several layers of management in MAA, the TG staff determined that they would check my bag only until SIN, but would send a note to BKK and SIN to have them retagged.
Arrived in BKK, and needless to say, there had been no note sent, and the BKK transfer desk staff told me that this was not TG's problem and UA had to figure it out in SIN.
So my bag is going to show up at baggage claim in SIN while I wait in transit to connect the next morning. Does anyone have any experience with this situation or any advice on how to ensure that my bag accompanies me on SIN-HKG-SFO on Tuesday? I'm having visions of never seeing my bag again because the police see it abandoned on the conveyer belt or some such!
thanks in advance!
When you land in SIN, go to the UA transfer desk (if they are closed, go to TG/SQ transfer desks). You will need to get boarding passes any ways from UA transfer desk. Tell them that your luggage might be in the carousel and they need to reclaim it and re-tag (Since you are not planning to clear immigration/customs in SIN). SIN baggage services are very good to excellent. Should not be a big problem.
If you do clear immigration and customs in SIN to find your luggage, then you cannot re-enter for transit hotel (because they may not let you get back inside way before your flight time).
