Also is 1 hour connection between terminal 1 and 2 at ORD a challenge. I am assuming she won't have to get any luggage or do customs or anything and just run to the next flight?
You should be able to check your luggage all the way through from YYZ. You will clear US Customs & Immigration as well in YYZ, so you can make your way strait away to the gate.
T2 (Air Canada) and T1 (Continental / United) are connected airside. You will arrive at E1-E2 and depart from B1-B4, so not much of a walk as you can
see from this map.
The RCC near B6-B7 is the best of the lot, and has a CO representative.
