For domestic travel the purpose of government issued ID is to validate the identity of the ticketed traveler. Since an expired passport is still official government-issued confirmation of one's identity, there is no valid reason to reject its use for this purpose. At the time of the OP one could even travel to the US on an expired passport as an active one was not required, just sufficient government photo ID.
