Sydney Marriott Hyde Park: trip report

Stayed in the Sydney marriott next to Hyde Park (*not* the Harbor Marriott) for 9 nights.

POSITIVES:
* Checkin was fast, friendly and efficient.
* Lobby decent. Not wonderful, but nice.
* Three lifts. Fast service
* Room key required to use lifts - extra security
* I had a junior suite. It was reasonably spacious - not huge, but OK.
* Location was pretty good - subway station right across the street.
* Food in lounge was good:
DINNER:
- Two hot choices: egg rolls and something lese
- Lots of sliced fruit
- Three cheese selections, with table water crackers
- Tortilla chips, salsa and hummus
- White and red wine: cheap but OK
- Good coffee
- Nice little desserts
- Fast clearing of tables
BREAKFAST
- Two hot choices: eggs and meat
- Lots of sliced fruit
- Great cereal with yoghurt, walnuts and raisins ^
- Good coffee & juice
- Fast clearing of tables

NEGATIVES:
* The decor was really old and tired. Looked like a ghetto
* Same for the bed and linens
* Bad housekeeping: restocking stuff was catch-as-catch-can, and even when I asked for things (like bathrobes), they didn't show unless I called the manager
* Technical issues with wake-up call service: I would get two calls, one by a machine and the 2nd by a human, even tho I hadn't requested that. If you get the first call and then immediately get in the shower, the 2nd call is an issue.
* Lounge was small and had sun streaming in at all hours of the day, making it uncomfortably hot
* For that matter, the whole hotel was hot.
* There was smoking in the hotel, and the management did nothing.

All in all, not a bad place to stay - not the worst place I've ever stayed by a long shot. BUT: for a hotel that purports to be a 5* place and charges upwards of $300AUS per night, it was pretty poor. I won't stay there again, and will opt for the Harbor Marriott instead.
