In the basement breakfast room here in Madrid. No real complaints about this very typical, but well maintained tourist style hotel. The branding is rather new so all the print material still identifies this as Hotel el Prado, part of the Hotels Culturales Tematicos. To that end the rooms are all named after a different wine region in the country, and there is a nice lounge off the minuscule lobby filled with wine books and magazines, in addition to a PC.

This is notated as a three star property and has few pretentious to providing other than clean and comfortable surroundings in rather small basic rooms with baths. The bathrooms have the standard European style shower, that is a spray unit that can be raised or lowered to the level desired, mounted above the tub. There is a squeeze bottle of shower gel/shampoo but also provided is an array of items like soap, a razor, toothbrush, etc.

Wifi is free but ask for the code. TV is very small but so is the room so you're likely not to spend much time in it, or watching it. Floors are nicely finished wood and rooms have been modernized, though some furniture shows it's age. Bed is comfortable and has those molding foam pillows. Lots of easy to access electrical outlets for recharging stuff.

Location is ideal for a budget tourist, just up the street from the Palace Hotel and Prado/Thyssen and other museums and galleries, plus a short walk to the Plaza de Mayor or the shopping district around Plaza del Sol. If the weather's fine and you've got roller luggage, take the new Airport bus to Plaza Celebes (its second stop) cross over to the Banco de Espana and head towards the Westin Palace, then head up to Pado street past the Scientology HQ and you'll reach the hotel in about 5-minutes. Further along Prado is a small square where you'll find a nice selection of restaurants and tapas bars, including a microbrewery (Plaza Santa Ana). On a hot day you can enjoy a cold beer and some tapas sandwiches in the square for under €6 per person!

My rate was €90 prepaid and included the standard cold cuts buffet with some very nicely made coffees from the usual machine. No real A|Club recognition, but a good starting point for a long weekend that will see me sampling some higher-end hotels too.
