Well YYZ has a crew base unlike JFK. Since it was 8 hours total flight time, the orginal crew would have exceeded the maximum hours of operating time. Most likely, a spare YYZ crew was called in to continue the flight. Also, an aircraft was available which was scheduled to do YYZ-HKG. This is embarassing.... YYZ has a crew base and not JFK - a port with 4 daily flights per day... embarassing......
By the way, I never got a reply from CX about my broken baggage, I know Guy told me to stay at the terminal until I find a CX staff. However, usually there's only ONE CX ground staff whenever I arrive at JFK T7 and that day he/she was nowhere to be found. This is sickening for such a major long-haul port for CX.
