Because back when it was invented and UA's computers had punch cards and vacuum tubes..there was only enough room in the system for a 2 bit field. So in the computer they were:

1P=Premier Exec
2P=Premier
When a computer sorts these alphabetically/numerically 1K goes to the top. Obviously it could be called 100K now, but the 1K brand has become iconic (and is trademarked) so they keep using it.
Iconic? Perhaps to UAers - to many others it makes no sense at all. Is a 2P twice as good as a 1P? Logic would suggest - but then "Premier Exec" sound superior to "Premier". IMHO, all in all UA naming system makes poor sense, iconic as it may be to some.
