I had just reached DM last year when I had to take UA because I was going to ORD and needed the non-stop flight. On the return trip from ORD I got to the airport 2 hours early went to the SC with no DL credentials. They let me in with my ID and just asked me to write down my SkyMiles number.

I only had to do this once at ORD, so YMMV.
