So I have about 37k Starwood points, and 8 Southwest credits.
Going by the rationale that you need 16 credits for a free flight (is it round trip?), then if I were to transfer Starwood points to Southwest at a ratio of 1500 per 1 credit, I would then need to transfer 12000 points to get 8 credits, which would then be redeemed for a free flight certificate (I believe).
I value Starwood points at 2.15 cents (as per this link -
http://www.plasticiq.com/blog/what-i...guest-program/ ). That would make those points worth $258 or so (I try to translate everything into a dollar value, so I have a idea on how things are worth). Is it worth spending that for a ticket? I ususally fly MDW to BWI, so it doesn't seem like it would be worth it.
Also, what I'm wondering is that in March, it seems Southwest's program will convert each credit to 1200 Southwest points, giving me 9600 points. It feels like a bit of devaluing of points, if I were to transfer 1500 points per credit, and then have the credits be converted to 1200 points per credit.
I'm assuming that 16 Southwest credits at 1200 points is 19200 Southwest points, which should be enough for a free flight, though I could be wrong. The conversion happens on 3/1.
I know that there was a message posted about not being able to transfer Starwood points to Southwest after 3/1, and the lurkers (hi lurkers!) let us know that Starwood and Southwest are still working on a new point conversion process.
Heck, I just might continue to save up Starwood points for that trip to Paris that my wife wants to go on. I'm just wondering if it makes sense to spend the Starpoints this one time for a free plane flight. My gut is telling me that it's not making much sense to do so - with the value of the Starpoints that I would need to transfer, as well as the devaluation of the Southwest points.
