bigguy, first it isn't even an expedition "from" Paris, as the cemetery is still in Paris. It is definitely worthwhile to visit, not only for Oscar, but the wealth of other celebrated people buried there; Chopin, Balzac, Morrison, Bernhard, et. al.

Interesting to note, I first visited Pere Lachaise @ 20 years ago, and the first place I went was to Jim Morrisons' grave. At the time, he was the main attraction and had been for some years...empty liquor bottles, old bouquets, etc., all strewn about his headstone. Fast forward to a couple years ago, you'll have a hard time finding the Lizard King without a map of the yard.

Nowadays, the fashionable thing is for young girls to plant a lip print on Oscars' headstone, (which, BTW, had been replaced from my first visit). Three British girls, no more than early 20's, were standing in front of the new, large slab with~I think it was an angel on the top~ headstone, debating whether they were willing to put their lips on the marble to leave their print. I offered to take their picture, if they'd all do it at the same time.

I must be the biggest hetero Oscar Wilde fan on earth, but to this day I have no idea why it's become trendy for young women to kiss his headstone. Make the trip to la cimitiere, tho, and not just for him. It's a lovely hour or so walk in its' own right.
