High speed Internet access is an extra profit center for the hotel, pure and simple.
Providing high speed access is usually a money saver for the hotel. The number of phone lines and associated equipment that is required to accomodate all the dial-up users far exceeds the cost of implementing high speed access.
As to the WiFi access, don't count on that being free. It is being installed by athird-party provider, who is no doubt paying fees to the hotel in order to provide the service. The provider is no doubt planning to recoup the investment and commissions through access fees from guests.
