Also, since it was the GA's fault, they should have used an unsold F seat to accommodate that pax if any remained. Was F full?
I am of the opinion that confirmed means confirmed means confirmed, especially when using an upgrade instrument other than e500/EXP comps. I'd probably have asked for the next flight with J (forget C inventory at this point) and if that wasn't till the next morning, they were free to offload your checked luggage if you had any and put you on that.
A FA thought there was an open seat in F, but wasn't sure. I didn't check.
Looking back, I should have been more assertive about my confirmed upgrade. However, I was too embarrased and disappointed to really put up a fight. I also think the GA's rushed approach made it seem like a foregone conclusion. Even when I pointed it out to her that my exit row seat was taken, she just shrugged her shoulders and left.
As a side note, the FAs truly felt bad for me. Both the C-class FAs boozed me up for free and gave me the hot-cookie-n-milk treatment. I was very appreciative. They were the superstars.
