Personally, I would think that AA should cater to those who fly alot: EXP.
Although I'm an EXP, I don't believe that AA should accommodate me no matter what. The issue here is the timeline. OP states "about 20 minutes" they rec'd the BPs. If it was really 20 minutes, then the GA processed the upgrade too soon. However, if it was 15 minutes prior to departure and the EXP wasn't at the gate, then the EXP shouldn't have gotten an upgrade.
Either way it could have been handled better.
To the OP: make sure whoever gifted you that eVIP gets it back.
