The numeric portion referred to the actual desk podium in the departures lounge in the US area (92, 93, 94, etc). The alpha portion referred to the actual bridge through which the aircraft was parked (Q, R, S, etc). In other words, the flight was controlled through the transborder area, while in actuality it could be parked and gated in the international section.

Wouldn't this cause confusion for passengers? The jet bridges were not posted by letters from the pilots perspective. When I flew out of gate 98Q it was in 1995. In 2001 all the terminal 2 bridges were changes to 200-299. In 1995 they all were posted 70-115.
