Actually, the online reservations system does ask you to specify whether the passenger is a child or an adult, and it defines child as under 15. The website will validate this when you get to the step where the birth-date is entered. Also, if you designate that 1 child is flying, then the website will prevent you from booking any itinerary other than a nonstop, and it will charge you $100.

I think you're going to have to do the booking over the phone, and ask that they waive the reservations fee. I'd also request that they put some remarks in the PNR to cross reference your wife's PNR.
