Big Mac, yes this is what I have done on several recent trips to Japan when staying longer than 7 days but less than 14. The Suica/NEX deal is a bargain and you can then use the additional funds on the Suica card to get around Tokyo. The nice thing about the Suica is that the balance can also be used on the subways around Tokyo for which you could not use your JR pass. While two are not necessarily equivalent since your fare is deducted from your Suica balance (the JR pass is free on the JR lines around Tokyo) I think on balance it works out about the same and takes care of the first several days of your trip. Be sure to read the FT entries on the Suica/NEX. It is easy and straightforward to purchase when you exchange your JR pass voucher at NRT's JR service center.
