I did breastfeeding and cosleeping and i always purchased a seat for my under 2's on long-haul transatlantic flights.
My kids also hated being strapped down. It's still safer, no matter what your "parenting philosophy" is. My children were in the seats for take-off, landing and basically, when asleep (or rarely calm enough to sit in them). It "works", trust me! It's safer, no matter if not everyone does it.
