Well just as a comparison, my credit card has a shortened version of my forename and my ID has long version plus middle initial. I've never had a problem except when I had to transfer from United to US at SFO and United cancelled my first outbound flight twice in a row after I checked in and I was unable to check-in for my connection at SFO without going to the counter. I figured my record was a mess though and that's why.
