This is just my opinion, but even at $30 per year, I'd say that is a darn good deal for what you get.
Like you, I recently applied for the UA card for the 15,000 mile bonus. The double mile bonus promotion is for purchases made up until Oct. 31, so I was told by a CSR. Anyhow, after getting your 15,000 bonus, then it becomes a regular card with a $60 annual fee that earns UA miles, 1 to 1.
However, with the Starwood, it only costs $30 and you earn a 5,000 mile bonus transfer when you transfer 20,000. Further, you could choose from over 20 different airlines to deposit your miles.
Now, I am one who hates to pay an annual fee for any card. However, The Amex SPG card is one that I am willing to pay an annual in order to benefit from the "privileges."
Again, just my personal take on the card.
