First of all Welcome!!
In my case i also had a speech from my parents like the one you had from your grandmother. I had never used the call button in my life after that speech, I always wait for the cabin crew to see me or if i want something to drink i go to the front and i am asking , i also do that in order to walk a little bit. But this is me and i think the proper thing is to use your call button because that's why exist but i don't think it is kind to use it constantly during a flight.
