No, my Chinese is fairly limited. Every morning at the hotel, the doorman would give the driver my address and argument would ensue. Guess the drivers were all expecting the big payoff rides to the airport instead of a trip a couple of miles away.

The attempted shortchanging was a little more surprising. Never had a problem with that elsewhere in China. It happened more than once, so it didn't seem accidental.
